Historic Churches in Australia

Australia is a country of diverse religion and beautiful historic churches. St. Mathew’s Anglican Church is certainly one of these types of churches. This historic church overlooks the colonial town of Windsor. It was built in eighteen seventeen and was designed by an architect by the name of Francis Greenway who was a convict at the time. St. Mathews can be recognized by its magnificent square tower that includes an ornamental dome. The grounds of this historical church include a Rectory and a graveyard.

St. Mary’s Cathedral is another historic church in Australia. It is located near Hyde Park in the wonderful city of Sydney. This ominous structure is constructed out of stone. An architect, William Wilkinson Wardell, designed this Gothic style church after the first St. Mary’s Cathedral burnt to the ground in eighteen sixty five. Twin towers reach towards the sky at the south side of this massive structure while another huge tower is eminent in its middle. The Cathedral of St. Mary is well known for being the mother church of Catholicism in Australia.

Hobart, Australia is home to St. George’s Church which was built in the eighteen thirties. It was constructed in a Greek Rival style. St. George’s Church has a history for being the Mariner’s Church and it has been the cornerstone for sailors and fishermen for centuries. The church holds a service once a year that is dedicated to all Mariners.

There are numerous churches in Australia. Some of these churches are new while others are historic. Australia is truly a land of glorious churches.
